A cardiac CT (computed tomography) scan for coronary calcium provides information
about the presence, location and extent of calcified plaque in the coronary
arteries—the vessels that supply oxygen-containing blood to the
heart muscle.
The goal of a cardiac CT scan for calcium scoring is to determine if coronary
artery disease (CAD) is present and to what extent, even if there are
no symptoms. Your physician may recommend this non-invasive screening
study if you have risk factors but no clinical symptoms of CAD. The low
dose CT scan takes 10-15 minutes and requires a physician’s order.
CT calcium scoring is not usually covered by insurance but is available
at Winchester Medical Center, Warren Memorial Hospital and Shenandoah
Memorial Hospital for $99.
