Respiratory Care

Respiratory Care in Virginia & West Virginia

Just as your lungs and airways are an integral part of your body’s functioning, our respiratory care and cardiopulmonary service teams are essential to the care at every one of our Valley Health locations. Whether in the acute care setting, the neonatal intensive care unit, or emergency department, our Valley Health experts constantly provide respiratory care and assist patients with their problems.

Our respiratory care practitioners routinely treat patients suffering from asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, viral infections, pneumonia, lung tumors, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, apnea of prematurity, and more.

A few of the diagnostic tests that we provide include:

  • Holter Monitoring
  • Event Monitoring
  • Arterial Blood Gas Analysis
  • Cardiac Stress Test
  • Echocardiogram

Valley Health is also known for our commitment to bettering our communities through educational programs, symposiums, and more.

Interventional Bronchoscopy

One of the services we provide to treat patients with peripheral lung lesions is interventional bronchoscopy. Interventional bronchoscopy provides a three-dimensional map of the lung, enabling the physician to perform a more precise biopsy, place markers for radiation therapy, and/or facilitate the removal of a small peripheral lung lesion.

Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET or VO2 Max)

CPET or VO2 Max testing is used for the assessment of patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary disease. It involves the measurement of gas exchange, minute ventilation, maximal oxygen uptake, and more. It provides the physician the information to determine the best treatment pathway for the patient.

SuperKids Asthma Initiative

The SuperKids Asthma Initiative (SKAI), funded by Valley Health and Winchester Medical Foundation and developed by a team of physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals, provides education and support to children with asthma and their families. The goal of the SuperKids Asthma Initiative is to help children achieve their full potential despite having asthma.

The SKAI Toolbox is a resource for children with asthma and their parents. The contents of the toolbox reinforce the education received from physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals. The toolboxes are provided to children being discharged from Winchester Medical Center.
