technologies to assist in diagnosing and treating conditions of the brain
and spine. Many of our neurologists and neurosurgeons specialize in the
performance and interpretation of neuroimaging through fellowship training.
Neuroimaging diagnostic tests include:
Computed tomography (CT)
Computed tomography (CT) angiogram
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA): a test that uses MRI technology to examine blood vessels in the brain
and neck. May be performed with or without contrast material.
Functional MRI: the use of MRI technology to learn which regions of the brain are active
in a specific function, as in speech. This technique is especially useful
to a neurosurgeon when planning surgery to remove a brain tumor or other lesion.
Single-photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT): a type of nuclear imaging test using a radioactive substance and special
camera to create 3-D pictures which allows the doctor to analyze the function
of the brain. This scan is especially helpful in determining which parts
of the brain are being affected by seizures.
