Endoscopy is a procedure that uses an endoscope or “scope.” Endoscopes are used for viewing the inside of the body, and they may also be used in some types of surgeries. Endoscopies are typically lighted and some are equipped with tiny video cameras that feed images to a computer screen. Endoscopy is used to provide images of parts of the body that could not otherwise be seen. It is heavily used in the screening for cancer, as well as in diagnosis and treatment of problems of the gastrointestinal tract.
During an upper endoscopy, the endoscope is passed through the mouth and throat and into the esophagus. The procedure is used to examine the esophagus, stomach and the upper part of the intestine (duodenum).
A lower GI endoscopy is used to examine the large intestine (colon). A colonoscopy examines the entire colon and rectum and may be recommended as a screening tool for colorectal cancer. A sigmoidoscopy examines only the lower part of the colon and is also a screening test for colorectal cancer.
Our Endoscopy Center, based on the campus of Winchester Medical Center (Suite 100 of Medical Office Building II), is a modern and advanced system fully equipped to provide gastrointestinal endoscopy as well as minor medical/surgical procedures.
