Warren Memorial Hospital Honored as Top 100 Rural & Community Hospital by The Chartis Center for Rural Health

Warren Memorial Hospital Honored as Top 100 Rural & Community Hospital by The Chartis Center for Rural Health

For the second year in a row, Warren Memorial Hospital received The Chartis Center for Rural Health’s Top 100 Rural & Community Hospital designation. Warren Memorial Hospital is one of only two hospitals in Virginia to make the Top 100 list for 2025. A total of 762 rural and community hospitals across the nation were evaluated, and only facilities with the highest scores in the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance Index earned a spot on this year’s list.

The Chartis Index is the industry’s most comprehensive assessment of rural hospital performance. The index evaluates hospitals on performance across eight key pillars that fall within the categories of Value, Market and Finance. Warren Memorial Hospital’s total index rank of 92.9 reflects strong performance across multiple performance measures. The hospital’s Outcomes, Cost and Charge performance measures ranked in the top quartile in the nation.

“This recognition is truly a reflection of the high quality, safe and effective care our team provides for our patients every day,” said Jennifer Coello, Administrator, Warren Memorial Hospital. “I’m extremely proud to work alongside such a dedicated team of caregivers here at WMH to deliver this level of care for our community.”

Chartis’ scoring methodology rewards facilities with strong patient outcomes, including lower readmission and mortality rates than other hospitals. The methodology also recognizes facilities with strong cost efficiency and lower average costs. To reward facilities with competitive charges for inpatient and outpatient care, lower average charges receive higher percentile rankings in this category.

Rural facilities included for evaluation are those located in a rural zip code, as designated by the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy, with a bed count not exceeding 200.

In addition to the Top 100 Rural & Community Hospital list, Chartis also evaluates 1,328 Critical Access Hospitals each year. Two Valley Health hospitals, Page Memorial Hospital, located in Luray, Va., and Hampshire Memorial Hospital, located in Romney, West Va., received a separate recognition from Chartis specific to Critical Access Hospitals. Each hospital was recognized with a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital designation for the second straight year. Page Memorial Hospital is the only Critical Access Hospital in Virginia to make this year’s Top 100 list, while Hampshire Memorial was one of only two hospitals in West Virginia to make the list. Across the region, Valley Health is committed to serving the needs of our patients in our acute care and critical access hospitals, as well as our network of Urgent Care centers, outpatient care sites and more than 70 medical practices.
