Future Healthcare Professionals "Met" and Named Surgical Robots at Warren Memorial Hospital

In early-March, 75 enthusiastic students from four local elementary schools and two high schools participated in a unique, hands-on learning experience at Warren Memorial Hospital, where they had an opportunity to "meet" our da Vinci Xi and Mako surgical robots.

During their time at WMH, students had the rare opportunity to gain hands-on experience maneuvering the da Vinci and Mako surgical systems. Under the guidance of experienced professionals, students operated the robotic arms of the da Vinci, simulating real surgical procedures. They demonstrated impressive hand-eye coordination as they unwrapped candy and performed other delicate tasks with high precision using the robotic instruments. This interactive experience allowed them to understand the superior control offered by these advanced technologies.

The event, which was aimed at inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals, challenged the students to propose names for each robot. Two students from Leslie Fox Keyser Elementary School provided the winning names. Avery Bass selected "Apollo" for the da Vinc Xi; and Adrian Hunter presented "Mr. Armstrong" for the Mako.

Additionally, students toured the hospital and engaged in lively discussions with care providers and clinical leaders. The students asked insightful questions about the capabilities and benefits of robotic-assisted surgery, gaining valuable knowledge about how these technologies are transforming modern surgical care. Jennifer Coello, WMH Administrator, held a Q&A session with a group of fifth graders during their lunch, and they proved quite an engaged and inquisitive bunch!

The direct interaction with clinical professionals provided students with a deeper appreciation and understanding of the innovative tools and techniques used in healthcare today, along with many aspects related to the operation of their local hospital.

The event was even covered by WHSV TV3 and ran on the evening news!
