Caregiver Spotlight: Gina, VMT School Graduate & EMT

At Valley Medical Transport (VMT), our team members bring compassion and skill to every call, making a real difference in our community. This week, we’re excited to feature Gina, an EMT who’s been with us for seven months and is a graduate of the Valley Health EMT School. We asked Gina about her journey, her experiences, and what makes working at VMT so special. Here’s what she had to say.

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career as an EMT?
A: "With experience in the home health setting, I was looking for more need to work in crisis situations. I had a desire to work in a more critical situation."

Q: What do you find most rewarding about being an EMT?
A: "When I am able to keep a patient calm in some of the scariest times of their lives. Making them feel safe and comfortable. When family members thank me for a safe transport and for giving such great care."

Q: Can you share a memorable experience where you felt you made a difference in someone’s life?
A: "I was in the back of the ambulance with a teen boy going to a behavioral rehab facility, and he was so upset with himself and just crying so much. I will never forget how I got him to talk about himself and told me his hobbies and how he did in school. He was no longer crying and was in such a better mood during the transport."

Q: How has working at Valley Health helped you grow personally and professionally?
A: "Personally, I have accomplished so much here with learning this career field. I worked hard to get to where I am today. Professionally, I am more knowledgeable. I am a stronger care provider. I desire to keep learning every day."

Q: What sets Valley Medical Transport apart from other organizations?
A: "The staff here are supportive and helpful in many ways. During EMT school, they worked with me one-on-one and encouraged me not to give up. Everyone here lends a hand anytime you may need it."

Q: What would you say to someone considering becoming an EMT or paramedic?
A: "If you truly have a passion for it, then go for it. Having some medical background is very helpful. This job is very rewarding, fast-paced, and every day is exciting."

Q: What career growth opportunities are available for EMTs at Valley Health?
A: "Continuing education, career growth in becoming Field Training Officers."

Q: If you attended VH EMT School, what aspects of the program did you find most valuable?
A: "My instructor was great. She is very knowledgeable and very educated. She was thorough and had no problems helping students on her own time to ensure they succeeded. She pushed me hard. Helped me to quit doubting myself."
