Ever wonder why it feels like you are constantly having to urinate? Do you ask yourself throughout your day, “Why am I going to the bathroom again?” Do you urinate when you sneeze, cough or jump?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may have pelvic floor dysfunction, or the inability to relax and coordinate the muscles in your pelvic region. Even though these symptoms are commonly reported to health care providers or discussed among friends and family, they should not be viewed as normal.
Research has shown that pelvic floor physical therapy can decrease the number of times you urinate a day and increase ease in making it to the bathroom in time. Pelvic floor physical therapy assists in strengthening pelvic floor muscles, so that your urinary system is able to function properly.
Bladder irritants can also cause an individual to urinate more than 7-10 times a day, which is the typical bladder frequency. Bladder irritation results from increased consumption of caffeine, alcoholic and carbonated beverages, and high levels of sugar or artificial sweeteners. By avoiding these listed items, you will notice a decreased urge to empty your bladder.
Instead of drinking alcoholic and carbonated beverages, try to drink more water. A typical goal for water intake should be half your bodyweight in ounces. For example, if you weigh 100lbs, then you should aim to drink at least 50 oz of water per day. Substituting processed sugary foods for fruits and vegetables will also positively impact your bladder.
