U.S. News & World Report Names Winchester Medical Center Among Best Hospitals in VA

Winchester Medical Center (WMC) has been named a 2024 - 2025 Best Regional Hospital by U.S. News & World Report and recognized as “High Performing” for 10 common adult procedures and conditions.

“High Performing” is the highest award a hospital can earn for U.S. News’ Best Hospitals Procedures & Conditions ratings and reflects performance in the top decile in the nation. In addition, WMC was the highest-ranked hospital in the Shenandoah Valley and is ranked 7th overall in Virginia this year. Of the 120 Virginia hospitals evaluated, only 15 met U.S. News standards for a “Best Regional Hospital” ranking. Nationwide, only 11% of hospitals earned a Best Hospitals numerical ranking.

New this year to Winchester Medical Center’s accolades is a national “High Performing” rating for the medical specialty of Urology, which reflects performance in the top 10% in the country in handling complex and difficult urologic cases.

As the highest-ranked hospital in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, WMC received accolades for being “High Performing” in the following common adult procedures and conditions, reflecting care that was significantly better than the national average as measured by factors such as patient outcomes, level of nursing care and patient experience:

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Colon Cancer Surgery
  • Heart Attack
  • Heart Failure
  • Kidney Failure
  • Knee Replacement
  • Lung Cancer Surgery
  • Pneumonia
  • Stroke

This recognition is the latest in a series of recent achievements in 2024 reflecting high quality, safe and effective care at Winchester Medical Center, including earning a 9th straight “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group in May.

“Being recognized by U.S. News & World Report as the best hospital in the Shenandoah Valley region and one of the top hospitals in Virginia is a tremendous honor and a reflection of the exceptional, dedicated caregivers we have at Winchester Medical Center,” said Senior Vice President, Acute Care and WMC President Tonya Smith. “I am incredibly proud of our entire team and their commitment to providing safe, high-quality care for patients in our community.”

For the 2024 - 2025 Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across the United States. State and metro area rankings reflect the highest-performing hospitals in the area across multiple areas of care.

The U.S. News Procedures & Conditions methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality such as survival rates, patient experience, and how successfully each hospital helps patients get back home.

“For 35 years, U.S. News has been a leading resource for patients navigating their health care decisions,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “The ‘High Performing’ designation acknowledges hospitals that consistently deliver high-quality care for specific medical procedures and conditions. This recognition highlights their expertise and commitment to patient well-being.”
