U.S. News & World Report Names Winchester Medical Center Among Best in Virginia

Winchester Medical Center (WMC) has been named a 2023-2024 High Performing Hospital for 10 procedures and conditions by U.S. News & World Report. “High Performing” is the highest award a hospital can earn for U.S. News’ Best Hospitals Procedures & Conditions ratings and reflects performance in the top decile in the nation. In addition, WMC was named a “Best Regional Hospital” in the Shenandoah Valley once again and is ranked 8th in the state this year.

As the highest-ranked hospital in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Winchester Medical Center received accolades for being “High Performing” in the following common adult procedures and conditions, reflecting care that was significantly better than the national average as measured by factors such as patient outcomes, level of nursing care and patient experience:

• Heart Attack
• Heart Failure
• Stroke
• Aortic Valve Surgery
• Lung Cancer Surgery
• Colon Cancer Surgery
• Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
• Diabetes
• Kidney Failure
• Knee Replacement

This recognition is the latest in a series of recent achievements in 2023 reflecting high quality, safe and effective care at Winchester Medical Center, including being named a Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospital in the Nation by Fortune and PINC AI™ in March, and earning a 7th straight “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group in May.

For the 2023-2024 Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across the United States. State and metro area rankings reflect the highest-performing hospitals in the area across multiple areas of care.

Of the 121 Virginia hospitals evaluated, only 18 met U.S. News standards for a “Best Regional Hospital” ranking. Nationwide, only 12% of hospitals earned a Best Hospitals ranking.

The U.S. News Procedures & Conditions methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality such as survival rates, patient experience, and how successfully each hospital helps patients get back home.

“For 34 years, U.S. News has provided data-informed rankings to help patients and their doctors find the best hospital to treat their illness or condition,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “Fewer than half of evaluated hospitals earned any High Performing rating. Hospitals that are High Performing have excelled in providing high quality care in specific procedures and/or conditions.”
