Joleen Borden was ready to leave for vacation when she slipped at home and ruptured her hamstring. Besides canceling her vacation, a torn hamstring put her active lifestyle on hold. Joleen received rehab for her right hamstring at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital Outpatient Rehabilitation in Woodstock with Rachel Szymkowiak, PT, DPT.
When Joleen started rehab she was using crutches and only bearing weight on her leg as much as she could tolerate. She worked with Rachel 2-3 times a week for 3 months and by the end was managing her pain with over-the-counter pain medications and pain management techniques.
Her rehab included manual therapy and therapeutic exercises. With the help of soft tissue mobilization, effleurage massage, kinesiotaping, strengthening, proprioception and balance exercises, Joleen was able to return to her job that required walking for up to 12 hours with minimal difficulty.
Returning to work was Joleen’s biggest concern and through her eagerness to learn she was able to return fully to a job that required a lot of walking and transitions from floor to standing. With Rachel’s instruction, compassion and knowledge, Joleen’s motivation and her husband’s support, she successfully recovered from a very painful injury.
