Winchester Medical Center Nurses Recognized by the Washington Post & American Nurses Association

Congratulations to Lisa Dellinger, RN-IV, BSN, Critical Care, and Barbara McWhinney, RN, MSN, CWON, Wound, Ostomy and Continence Services, who have been recognized as 2020 Star Nurses by The Washington Post in partnership with the American Nurses Association. In this “Year of the Nurse,” Star Nurse recognition is given for the first time to select women and men at the front lines of health care in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.

Earlier this year over 600 nurses were nominated by patients, colleagues and family from across the region. The American Nurses Association reviewed nominations and selected 100 deserving finalists to make up the 2020 list of Star Nurses. A panel of judges will select six Nightingale Award winners among these finalists, which will be announced at a virtual event on September 1.

Lisa and Barbara have long been “star nurses” at Winchester Medical Center (WMC), dedicating their careers– a combined total of 84 years!– to their patients.

Barbara McWhinney came to Winchester Memorial Hospital in 1967 and served as a staff nurse, head nurse or case manager in nearly every unit, including the ER and OR and recruitment. About 25 years ago she found her true calling helping wound, ostomy and continence patients. “I just love taking care of people,” she says. “I always think it could be my family member.” She earned both nursing degrees from Shenandoah College/ University.

Lisa Dellinger joined the military after graduating high school and was first trained as a med tech on a C-130 (later serving in the WV Air National Guard). She came to WMC in 1989 as a CNA, then worked in phlebotomy while completing her nursing degree. As a new nurse in 1996, Lisa was drawn to the teamwork and precision of the ICU’s heart team and has since worked nights in CC4. She completed her associate’s degree at Shenandoah University and BSN from University of Phoenix in 2010. She loves what she does and credits her “wonderful” preceptor, Betty Fahrner, for helping her find the right path.

Barbara and Lisa, we salute you for the passion you continue to bring to your work, especially during this uncertain time. Your dedication reflects on all of us and sets our patient care apart. We’re very proud you are on the Valley Health team!
