“I grew up around EMS, so it’s always been part of my world. I wanted to pursue it because I love helping people and advocating for my patients. There’s something special about being there for someone when they need it most.”

At Valley Health, Valley Medical Transport, our team is full of dedicated individuals who bring heart and purpose to their work every day. This month, we’re shining a light on graduates from our EMT School like Makenzie S., an EMT who’s been with us for a year and embodies what it means to serve with compassion. Get to know her through this Q&A!

“Being the light in people’s lives on their worst days and making a difference—that’s what keeps me going. Knowing I can bring a bit of comfort or hope means everything.”

Q: Can you share a memorable experience where you made a difference?
“It was just a simple transport...my patient and I were talking, and she suddenly got tears in her eyes. She thanked me because she felt I’d advocated for her and taken the time to really listen. That small connection reminded me why I do this.”

“You can start as an EMT and build yourself up to a paramedic, then even move into leadership or management roles. There’s so much room to grow here.”
