“I always felt drawn to caring for people and being a nurse, but what sealed the deal for me was my mother receiving a scary breast cancer diagnosis my senior year of high school. Caring for her and being her primary caregiver made me 100% sure I am meant to be a nurse.”
Meet Kayla, RN, at War Memorial Hospital. Kayla shares: "I have been a nurse for five years, and I have worked in med-surg and rehab at War Memorial Hospital since I graduated nursing school. I love the family atmosphere and know many of the patients because I have lived and worked in this community my entire life. I could not even imagine leaving this unit because I know that I will never find another work family like this one! I always felt drawn to caring for people and being a nurse, but what sealed the deal for me was my mother receiving a scary breast cancer diagnosis my senior year of high school. Caring for her and being her primary caregiver made me 100% sure I am meant to be a nurse."

Valley Health has four Critical Access Hospitals in Virginia and West Virginia, helping to improve access to affordable healthcare by keeping essential services in rural communities.
- Critical Access Hospitals often have a close-knit staff, as they are often the only healthcare provider in the area. This can create a unique and supportive work environment.
- Working at a Critical Access Hospital can be a great way to gain experience in a variety of medical specialties, as the staff must be prepared to handle any medical situation that comes their way.
- Critical Access Hospitals are often located in rural areas, so working at one can provide a unique opportunity to experience a different kind of lifestyle, including beautiful scenery, lower population, and cost of living.
