“One of the biggest perks of this field is the variety of paths you can take. When I started, I didn't realize how many modalities—like CT, MRI, and ultrasound—I could pursue," he shares. "Each modality offers new challenges and more growth opportunities.”

From CNA to Radiologic Technologist: David's Journey at Valley Health

David's healthcare career journey began in 2015 when he completed the CNA program at Warren Memorial Hospital and joined the GI unit at Winchester Medical Center (WMC). For five years, he provided care on the 5th floor, developing a passion for patient care and a desire to grow within the healthcare field.

Deciding to take the next step towards advancing his career, in 2018, David enrolled in the WMC School of Medical Imaging. Originally considering nursing, he discovered radiology and decided to pursue it. While attending the two-year program, he worked night shifts as a CNA, and an unlicensed tech, balancing full-time work and school.

Flexibility and Support: Key to Success

David credits the support and flexibility from his peers, managers, and Valley Health with helping him balance school and work. "The night shifts were tough, but having flexible hours made it manageable," he recalls. With the option to adjust his shifts and work as a safety sitter on nights and weekends, he found a way to successfully navigate the program's demands.

"Ever since I started at Valley Health, management has backed me up every step of the way," he says, reflecting on his experience.

Growth and Opportunity in Medical Imaging

As a licensed Radiologic Technologist, David appreciates the many avenues for growth. "One of the biggest perks of this field is the variety of paths you can take. When I started, I didn't realize how many modalities—like CT, MRI, and ultrasound—I could pursue," he shares. "Each modality offers new challenges and more growth opportunities."

David is now working with Valley Health and a college in North Carolina to pursue certification in radiation therapy, with plans to start clinical work at the WMC Cancer Center next year.

Advice for Aspiring Healthcare Professionals

David recommends shadowing programs for those interested in healthcare who still need to decide their path. "I had never thought about X-rays until I saw an ad for the program. Now, I get to image the human body every day and contribute to the diagnostic process. It's challenging but so rewarding."

David's path demonstrates the many directions a healthcare career can take, especially within medical imaging. At Valley Health, employees have access to the support, education, and flexibility needed to explore various specialties and develop new skills. Whether interested in X-ray, MRI, or another modality, you can pursue a career in a field that most interests you.
