Screening mammography is the first line of defense against breast cancer, and it is recommended that all women schedule a mammogram once a year when they turn 40. Your doctor may recommend an exam sooner than this if you have above average risk factors, such as cases of breast cancer in your family history.
The added value of a 3D mammogram is that it reduces or removes overlapping tissue, particularly in a woman with dense breast tissue on mammogram. On a 2D mammogram, overlapping tissue can mask a suspicious finding. On a 3D mammogram, the overlap is reduced or removed and this improves the ability of radiologists to detect breast cancer and reduces number of times a woman may be called back for additional imaging.
